These roaches seem to not do very well when it is extremely wet but they still can live when it is very wet. A lot of them mismolt and also a whole lot die (nymphs and adults) because of some reason. I think mold is why they die like that. Lobster Roaches die like that too but they seem to do alright with just a few dying like that. I am going to move the Red Runners into a dryer place. Lobster Roaches do not mismolt when it is this wet. Many nymphs and adult females have different colors than the ones that lived in a dryer place. There is a lot of variation in the color too. But there are many that look normal (black females and red and black nymphs) in the very wet bin. Some pictures. These are Red Runners from the wet bin.
I wrote this in 11/24/2012. Note: If the link does not work go to Blattodea.speciesfile.org and search for Shelfordella. They have multiplied! I have very many now. It seems like the genus these roaches are in is Shelfordella and not Blatta. I guess they used to be in the genus Blatta but are now Shelfordella lateralis. I wrote this in 07/09/2012. I am very frustrated! They keep eating each other and their eggs so I have to get the egg cases out quickly! I am feeding them a lot of burger meat but they seem to like each other a lot more. I should read about Red Runners. I wrote this on 05/24/2012. Note: Red Runners are actually in the genus Shelfordella. Shelfordella lateralis. I got a lot of Red Runners Roachcrossing.com about a week ago! I ordered 500 mixed Red Runner nymphs and 15 mixed nymph Gold Medal Roaches. These are great feeders. Not many more mantids will die because of sick crickets, YAY! These roaches are smaller than the Lobster Roaches. They cannot climb slippery plastic or glass while Lobster Roaches could. Red Runners have huge back legs kind of like a cricket. They do run much faster than Lobster Roaches. Here is a video of them. |
